What are the most common MOT failures?

Based on the pattern in official MOT testing data, lighting and signalling problems, things like a blown bulb or a cracked lens, are consistently the single most common reason cars fail, ahead of suspension, brakes and tyres.

What makes this useful to know: a lot of the most common failures are cheap, quick checks you can do yourself before a test - working lights, tyre tread and pressure, and topping up screenwash and other fluids. Catching these in advance won't fix a genuine mechanical fault, but it does mean you're less likely to fail on something that costs nothing to put right.
