How do I check my oil level?

On cars with a traditional dipstick, park on level ground with the engine off (ideally checked when the engine's cold, or has been off for a few minutes if it was recently running). Pull the dipstick out, wipe it clean with a cloth, push it back in fully, then pull it out again and read the level against the min and max marks.

The oil should sit somewhere between those two marks - below the minimum means it needs topping up, and it shouldn't be overfilled above the maximum either.

Not every modern car has a physical dipstick - some rely entirely on an electronic oil level sensor and display the reading on the dashboard instead. If you can't find a dipstick, check the handbook to see how that particular car expects you to check it.
